Stack House Apartments

Built in the summer of 2013, the Stack House is a LEED platinum apartment complex in Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhood. The 1,000 square foot rooftop garden is operated as an in-house production farm and serves as a new and unique amenity for this urban housing development. Based on input from Stack House residents, a garden-wide planting plan is developed and managed by Seattle Urban Farm Company (SUFCo) staff to ensure maximum productivity and beauty throughout the season. Building residents are encouraged to attend bi-monthly work parties to help out in the garden, learn organic garden practices and harvest produce.

All crops are harvested and delivered to an on-site “farm stand”. Produce is free for building residents and weekly newsletters keep them informed of garden happenings, available produce and new recipes. In subsequent seasons, residents will be encouraged to take on more gardening and harvesting responsibilities and work cooperatively to keep the garden producing at its highest potential. SUFCo staff will transition to a supporting role, continuing to work with residents through a series of educational programs to ensure crop health and community involvement.
