If you’re interested in learning about organic growing, we’re
happy to work together with you and share our knowledge as we
seed, care for, and harvest vegetables and flowers from your
garden.
We use only organic methods to manage your
garden, so you’ll know your soil will be healthy and productive
for years to come, and your vegetables will be free of herbicides,
synthetic pesticides, and genetically modified organisms.
By bringing the farmers to your yard, you help us share the risks
of growing food. If the weather is poor, you’ll notice your
garden is not as productive as it might otherwise be. If the
weather is good, you’ll be savoring a bumper crop of delectable
vegetables!
The size of an urban farm is widely variable.
To determine the size of your farm we take into consideration multiple
factors, such as the number of people in your household and your eating
habits. Often the most limiting factor in establishing a garden is the
availability of space with adequate sun exposure. Farms can range from one 4
ft. x 8 ft. bed (32 sq. ft.) to a 20 ft x 20 ft space (400 sq. ft.) and much
larger if space is available.
An urban farm will provide you both tangible and
intangible rewards. Our goal at the Seattle Urban Farm Company is to
provide your family with a wide variety of vegetables every week throughout
the growing season. Depending on the time of year, you may receive a basket
overflowing with tomatoes, peppers, beans, and salad greens or a box full of
butternut squash, Brussels sprouts, celery and leeks. In addition to
the supply of fresh produce, an urban farm will add beauty to your
landscape. The flowers and vegetables of all colors and sizes will
make your yard an even more desirable place to spend your summer days.
We believe that an urban farm can help foster a connection to our food,
environment and community.
Our farming techniques are based strictly upon
organic methods. Although we do not have a USDA organic certification,
we are confident that our practices exceed the Organic environmental and
health standards. We are dedicated to providing you with the freshest,
healthiest, best tasting produce possible.
Here in Seattle, we have a climate that is suitable
for growing many crops year-round. For most gardens, the majority of
the harvest takes place between early May and mid-October, depending on the
date of the initial installation and seasonal variations. If
you’re interested, we can prepare your garden in the fall for a winter
harvest of salad greens, herbs, and root crops.
